The benefits of CELEBRATING!

Updated: Dec 22, 2020

Mindset Made Simple Tip #19

Another Monday tip on Tuesday after a fun Mental Performance virtual session yesterday on CHANGE!

Thanks to those of you who joined me live and those of you who will watch the recorded version (which is available if you are interested – just reply to this email or shoot me an email at juliej@ssbperformance.com).

After reflecting on the information from yesterday’s session, I want to circle back to a tactic I mentioned two weeks ago in Tip #16.

If you’ll recall, I mentioned that the final part of developing a new habit or making positive change is CELEBRATING!

B.J. Fogg in Tiny Habits suggests that this is VITALLY important to our CELEBRATE our success to make the habit stick!

He says the total process is - When I…. I will…then I’ll… CELEBRATE.

I also mentioned that this is the part of the habit loop that gets overlooked because we feel silly celebrating something so simple…or we are not willing to put our positive emotion into play…or we don’t think it’s a big deal!

There is no doubt I overlooked this part as a coach. And that was a mistake!

We did some good things…

We memorized daily character building quotes. We gave back to community with joy.

As a daily post practice routine, we asked three questions.

· For what are you grateful?

· What did your teammate do well today? (to be sure we were observing and getting out of our own heads).

· What did you do well? (to help them get used to speaking about their successes with confidence since women tend to shy away from this)

But I DID NOT CELEBRATE small wins.

Had I known all the science behind this, I WOULD HAVE APPROACHED THIS VERY DIFFERENTLY!

When implementing positive change, starting a new habit, learning a new skill, getting out of our comfort zone, accomplishing something small or significant….

CELEBRATING makes us feel good.

It sends good stuff to our brains.

It cements our desire to keep going…to improve…to move toward growth…to perform better!

Fogg suggests we should think about what we do when we celebrate our team winning, a great shot, a great play, and take that action and use it when we perform our new habit each time….EVERY TIME!

I think we can take this even further…

If CELEBRATING sends good endorphins to our brains, we feel better, we are happier, we are more confident and in control.

So, encouraging our athletes to CELEBRATE a skill done well and to celebrate each time they go through the WHEN I….I WILL…process – will not only embed this new skill or habit, it will develop new neuropathways, ultimately building their brains!

But maybe most importantly, these good endorphins produce positive emotions which impacts team culture in a positive way – AND it is proven to aid in increased performance…AND increases in well-being! WOW!

Clearly, there are lots of things that effect team culture, performance and well-being. But if this small repeated and encouraged gesture can help, why not put it into practice?

I am proud of a lot of things I did as a coach, but I wish I would have incorporated this!

It may just be a game-changer!

As always, if I can be of help to your program, please reach out. I know budgets are tight, but this stuff is IMPORTANT NOW! If you have any interest at all, let’s talk. I bet we can work something out!

I hope you, your team and your families are healthy!

Until NEXT MONDAY 😊, be well!

Julie
